Guru Nanak Dev University (G.N.D.U.) was established at Amritsar, Punjab, India on 24 November 1969 to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev's birth quincentenary. Guru Nanak Dev University's campus is spread over 500 acres (200 ha) near village of Kot Khalsa, nearly eight km (5.0 mi) west of the Amritsar, next to Khalsa College, Amritsar. G.N.D.U. is both a residential and an affiliating university. In conceiving its future course, the objectives enshrined in the Act 1969 emphasized that the new university would make provision for imparting education and promoting research in the humanities, learned professions, sciences, especially of applied nature and technology. Studies and research on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, in addition to working towards the promotion of Punjabi language and spreading education among educationally backward classes and communities were the other commitments.

Campus
Guru Nanak Dev University campus is spread over 500 acres (200 ha) near the village of Kot Khalsa, some eight km (5.0 mi) west of the Amritsar City on Amritsar - Lahore highway, next to Khalsa College, Amritsar. G.N.D.U. presents a picture of modern architecture. Traditional red brick geometrical blocks represent its regard for time-honored values and its commitment to scientific advancement. Making its humble beginning in an annex of the adjoining Khalsa College, the university today boasts 37 academic departments, two regional centers, three constituent colleges and a score of support service departments together with several administrative offices.

Awards
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council accredited the university at the five-star level. Later, it was accredited at NAAC Grade "A" with a CGPA of 3.5. Most recently, it has been accredited with NAAC CGPA 3.51, enshrined with the esteemed "University with Potential for Excellence" and "Category - 1 Autonomy" Status by UGC and MHRD respectively.

Significant Achievements of University
Guru Nanak Dev University has been conferred upon the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” by UGC and accredited with “A++” grade (highest level as per modified criteria) by NAAC. University has also earned “Category One” status, and has become the only University to receive this elite status in the region of Punjab and Chandigarh. MHRD, Government of India has recognized the university as one of the top ten “High Performing State Public Universities” across India and has funded it under Rashtriya Uchhtar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA). It is ranked as 53rd amongst all universities and institutions in the country by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In World Universities Ranking (CWUR) the university is placed amongst top 9% of the universities of the world. The WEEK- Hansa Research Best University survey 2019 has placed Guru Nanak Dev University at 8th rank in North Zone Multi-Disciplinary Universities and at 14th rank in All India Multi-Disciplinary Universities. It has bagged 11th Rank in the State Universities of India in the “India Today Ranking-2020”. GNDU has been ranked 17th in India, announced by India Today (MDRA) survey 2019. The Government of India recognizing its contribution has established the Centre for Interfaith Studies and MYAS-GNDU Department of Sports Sciences and Medicine.

The university has made a mark in Sports having won the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for a record twenty three times which is based on performance in sports in the university system. Under “Khelo India” scheme of Govt. of India the university has been allotted two Academies in Fencing and Archery and two Centres of Excellence in Handball and Hockey. The university is known for its state of the art gymnasium, indoor multipurpose hall, international level swimming pool, Astroturf besides other sports facilities. The sportspersons are supported for attaining excellence by MYAS-GNDU Department of Sports Sciences and Medicine. More than twenty departments of the university have received varied grants under UGC-SAP, DST-FIST, and PURSE, in addition to the individual grants received by the faculty. Significant to mention here that the H-Index of the university stands amongst the top in the universities of this region at 112.

As a major initiative towards green environment the university has installed Rooftop Solar Energy Plant under Government of India's Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The university is zero waste discharge institution. It has in house waste water treatment plant (ETP), Rooftop water harvesting & underground water charging units. GNDU is now a Limited Vehicle University, with this, entry of four wheelers has been banned in the campus. E-buses have been provided for hop-on hop-off facility free of charge for the students. International Students are joining the university under “Study in India” programme. For student centric initiatives an Amphi Theatre named 'Golden Expressions' has been constructed to provide a platform to all the students to express themselves with an open mic. Open Gyms have been installed in campus for the fitness. Golden Jubilee Fitness Centre has state of the art facilities for the students. Psychological support is provided to the students by an eminent Psychology Consultant. The students themselves are running the social and cultural activities clubs like Dance Club, Drama Club, Photography Club, Food & Fitness club, Nature and wildlife club, Literary club, Social Service club, Music club, Science club, Movie Making club, Fine Arts club, Go Green club and GNDU Talkies.
